GOIN' TO AMERIKAY

GOIN' TO AMERIKAY

Wicklow boy left his father's land
Went to Amerikay
Went to Amerikay
Took a ship across the sea
Sailed for Amerikay
Sayin' I' gonna find that dream
'Cos that is the way to get along

Wicklow boy lost all he had
In Amerikay
In Amerikay
Lost all he had in Amerikay
On the road he did not have no home
Sayin God have mercy on my soul
'Cos this ain't no way to get along

Poor boy cried loud I must get some work
I must get some pay
I must get some pay
Must feed myself I must get some pay
I got no food and I lost my way
Lord see me to a better day
'Cos this is no way to get along

Man said I'll give you a job
At my factory
At my factory
I'll give you a job at my factory
Well that boy he did not look too pleased
That boy fell down cryin' on his knees
'Cos this ain't how I want to get along

Then a man said boy, join the military
Join the military
Join the American army
Fight for what's good, join in the military
Boy thought that this should never be
To be killed in a foreign country
'Cos that ain't no way to get along

I believe I'll ride I believe I'll ride
I believe I'll go back home
I believe I'll go back home
Back home where I am better known
Back home where they know my name
Back to Wicklow I will go home
Just as soon as I can get along
That boy got down and he worked and he prayed
That boy he worked and prayed
That boy he worked and prayed
Got himself a ticket for the ship
Back to the land that he had quit
He worked and prayed and he managed it
'Cos that is how he had to get along

Well the father sees his son
Coming back down the road
Coming back down the road
Says God bless have mercy upon my soul
My son who was lost has come home
My son has come back to Wicklow
Even though there ain't much goin' on

Father says to his eldest son
Call the family round
Call the family round
Ain't much to eat but let us have a feast
That is what we'll do well to say the least
Call the family let us have a feast
'Cos that is the way to get along

Eldest son says to his father
Do you not love me?
Do you not love me?
Father tells him love has to be free
Young son took his chance across the sea
Now he has come on back home to me
I've always loved you equally
And this is the way to get along
